Learn about this cemetery by the seaside, highlighting information of some of the interesting local Gosport families who have been interred therein...

The guided tour will cover the influence of Robert Cruickshank in the building of St Mark’s church as part of his development of Crescent Road, and his vision to create ‘Angelseyville’ within the village of Alverstoke in the mid-19th century, as a spa venue to rival Bath.

Your guide will describe the demise and demolition of the church in the early 20th century and, at the same time, develop the stories connected to the eight admirals and six generals interred in the cemetery, together with the histories and local links to some of the 260 people buried there.

Please arrive 10 minutes before the start time of the guided tour.

Accessibility details

On-street parking is available on St Mark's Road and Crescent Road. Space between gravestones is rather narrow in some places but wheelchairs can get to some of the site, which is level. The Churchyard is relatively small so no need to walk far, but seating is not available on site. Feel free to bring a fold-up stool if you need it. A good event for those who don't like crowds, and also for sensory experiences of touch and smell. Supervised children are welcome. The Anglesey Hotel bar (just opposite) has an accessible toilet for customers and serves refreshments, meals, and bar snacks.

Additional information

To get a fuller picture of Cruickshank's Angleseyville, you might like to wander up to Crescent Road, admire the sweeping curve of Regency buildings and walk in Crescent Gardens, which was also created in the period.
