Explore the 120-year-old, former Carnegie Library

To celebrate Heritage Open Days, we’ll be hosting two special open weekends at The Art House - opening parts of our building so visitors can explore the old 120-year-old, former Carnegie Library, now part of our Studio community.

The Carnegie Library side of our Studios showcases many of the building’s beautiful original features. Pick up a map to discover the original features of the former Library, including the book lift, Damascus School tiles and restored architecture. Learn about the building's history through the 20th and 21st centuries, whilst also exploring images of refurbishments and floor plans.

Heritage Open Day is also a great time to visit the latest exhibitions in our galleries, as well as to stop by our Shop and Coffee house which will be open throughout the day.

Public Transport The Art House is located just 60 seconds walk from Wakefield Westgate railway station. The free city bus connects us to key locations around the city centre, including Wakefield bus station and The Hepworth Wakefield. Cycling The Art House has a cycle station situated on Drury Lane, which is freely available to all. As well as ample bike parking, we also have a cycle repair station for minor repairs and pumping up your tires. Cycles are left at the owner’s own risk, however, the area is monitored by CCTV.
