Exploring the University of Surrey's Archive Collections
Archives and Special Collections, George Edwards Library, University of Surrey, Guildford, Surrey, GU2 7XH
The University of Surrey holds the University Archives, spanning our predecessor institution Battersea Polytechnic (founded in 1891) to the present day, as we celebrate the University’s 60th Anniversary this September.
Our other notable collections include the archives of E. H. Shepard, illustrator of 'Winnie-the-Pooh' and 'The Wind in the Willows', and the archive of Rudolf Laban, a prominent movement and dance theorist, along with over 100 archives relating to dance. We also hold special collections, such as a Victorian statesman's personal library.
We'll explore these collections using some of our favourite items to tell you more about what we do, then go behind the scenes into the store to show how we care for these precious items. You can also get hands on with a conservation session, cleaning some of our early 20th century Battersea student registration cards, discovering more about these fascinating records and how they can help with family and social history research.

There are Blue Badge spaces available near the Library building, on a first come, first served basis. Please let us know via [email protected] if you need a Blue Badge space so we can register your car.
The conservation session is optional and will include cleaning early 20th century student cards and finding out more about the individuals. We will ask that participants wash their hands prior to taking part and should expect to get a little grubby! We will ask you to store your bags in a secure area prior to the start. Please, no food or drink to be brought to this event.
