A Neighbourhood Through Time – Fairfield & Cannon Hill guided walk
Lancaster Railway Station/Tite & Locke, Station Road, Lancaster, Lancashire, LA1 5NW
In the second half of the 19th century Lancaster’s urban landscape changed dramatically as new industries boomed, resulting in new housing developments for workers, tradesmen, white collar employees, and the business and professional classes.
This guided walk will explore the development of the Fairfield and Cannon Hill suburb on the western edge of the town centre, an example of a residential suburb of low-density housing built for the ‘respectable classes’ from the 1860s onwards. The walk will trace the area’s transformation from agricultural and leisure usage into a residential suburb which includes 9 Grade II listed buildings and features work by nationally prominent Victorian architects, stained glass window manufacturers and landscape architects. Along the way we will reveal the stories of some of those people who lived and stayed here, including prominent members of the business community such as the Storey family, Lancaster’s first female mayor and a Royal Academy artist.
