Family Fortunes: The Winstanleys and Braunstone – historic talk
St Anne's Church Hall, 89 Letchworth Road, Leicester, Leicestershire, LE3 6FN
Join Dr Susan Barton as she explores how a momentous national event, the Civil War of 1642 to 1651, had a lasting local impact. The Royalist Hastings family had been Lords of the Manor since Medieval times but, as a consequence of their loyalty to King Charles I, their fortune was lost. Their estate at Braunstone was sold to James Winstanley, a Gray’s Inn lawyer from Lancashire in 1650. In 1776, James’ descendants commissioned Braunstone Hall where the Winstanleys lived until 1926. Regicide, double-dealing, scandal and entwined family relationships characterise this riches to rags and rags to riches story told in Susan’s lively, entertaining style. Dr Susan Barton will deliver a talk, as featured in her new book on the Winstanley family. Dr Barton is an honorary visiting research fellow at De Montfort University and is a regular speaker at conferences across Europe on a range of historic topics. Visitors will also get an opportunity to look around the Grade II Listed Church.
