Learn more about the pioneering Victorian market-gardeners of the Whitwell family and the 1888 'poison pen letters' scandal.

Join us at Hollybush as we dig into the history Whitwell family. Commemorated by a Leeds Civic Trust Blue Plaque, Hollybush farm was the former home of pioneering rhubarb farmer Joseph Whitwell who lived there with his extended family in the late 1800s. But all was not peaceful with the Whitwells! The family was embroiled in scandal when, in 1888, a series of defamatory letters were sent to the farm and suspicions fell on those closest to Joseph…

Tying into the HOD theme of 'Everyday Histories', we will uncover the very ordinary dramatics of a wealthy Victorian family, arguing over money and status. Visitors will be able to learn about the Whitwells, take a walk around the gardens where the farm once sat, and participate in family-friendly creative activities. This event is suitable for all ages and is a great opportunity to learn about local history in a beautiful location.
