Once widespread across Britain, corncrakes have experienced a dramatic decline, with breeding populations now limited to a small number of key areas. Often heard but rarely seen, the corncrake is best known for its distinctive call, which can be heard from dusk until dawn during the summer months. These remarkable birds are summer visitors to the UK, before migrating thousands of miles to spend the winter in central and southern Africa.
