Step into a hidden corner of Kent and uncover centuries of stories! Meet our friendly volunteers for historic talks between 14:00 - 16:00, hear fascinating tales and explore this atmospheric little chapel surrounded by peaceful countryside.

Just outside Faversham, north of the great Roman road Watling Street, now the A2, are the ruins of the small chapel of Stone-next-Faversham. Dedicated to Our Lady of Elverton, the chapel is the only Christian building in England to incorporate within its fabric the remains of a 4th century Romano-British mausoleum. The medieval builders used the Roman building as the chancel of the church, while the nave was built to the west in the 11th century and you can see among the flint construction where the builders reused roman bricks. The nave and the chancel were extended in the 13th century. There may have been an earlier timber-built Saxon church on the site.
While small, the history of the chapel is fascinating, and it is incredible that there is still so much to learn from a building that was abandoned nearly 500 years ago. Our volunteers will be on site giving talks about the history of the chapel. And many finds from excavations in the area are on display at the Maison Dieu in nearby Ospringe. The chapel is in a field immediately north of the A2, just west of Ospringe and opposite Faversham Road. Please park considerately in the nearby lane. Alternative, there is a car park in Ospringe, close to the Maison Dieu and a short walk from the chapel. The chapel is in a field a short walk away from the road, across farmland and grass, indicated by a brown sign.
