Flintham's Hidden Histories

Flintham, a Nottinghamshire village, was reasonably self sufficient until the early 20th century. Most of the food you ate, the clothes and shoes you wore, the equipment you used in and around your home were grown, reared, made or repaired by your neighbours. Many traditional skills have been long lost but are currently being celebrated in a shop window display at the Flintham museum. The display includes a leather horse harness, a skill which is being taught again at university level by a few people able to pass on their knowledge to a younger generation of horse owners. How old is the harness? Come and find out and hear about its history. After a cup of tea you will receive an illustrated map of the village showing where various craftspeople lived and worked. Enjoy a walk in the conservation area and see where, for example, the butcher, tanner, blacksmith, millers, bakers, clothes and shoemakers lived and worked until they were ready for the village undertaker's hand-made coffin.
