Join the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah RACE Centre and Education Trust for a special screening of Cup Fever (1965). We’ll be sharing a selection of items from our archive connected to the themes of football and Northern Childhoods.
2026 marks 40 years since the murder of Ahmed Iqbal Ullah, a young Bangladeshi Mancunian who was fatally harmed in a racist attack at school. At the RACE Centre, as well as remembering what happened to Ahmed and the tireless campaigning of his family and the community, we also remember Ahmed’s life and legacy.
Ahmed was a creative and energetic young person. He enjoyed playing sports, especially football. Ahmed’s love of football has inspired us to host this screening of Cup Fever (1965). The film shares the story of youth football team Barton Utd triumphing against the odds and features candid footage of 1960s Manchester.
As part of the event, we’ll be sharing a selection of items from our archives to be viewed before and after the screening. Join us for an evening of film, archive exploration and connection.

- This event will be hosted in the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah RACE Centre and Manchester Histories Hub. These spaces are located next to each other on the lower ground floor of Manchester Central Library. When you arrive at the Library, take either the stairs or the lift to the lower ground floor. Walk through the City Library space and bear right towards the RACE Centre Library and Manchester Histories Hub.
