Former Cottingham Urban District Council offices
1 Market Green, Cottingham, East Riding of Yorkshire, HU16 5QG
Cottingham Local History Society has its History Room here just inside the main door. It has pictures and exhibits donated by residents, the digital archive, which you can view, and displays which include Cottingham’s former ‘gentry’ houses and a history of the Market Green. There will also be an exhibition.
To the right of the entrance door was an office and the Cottingham Fire Station, which is now the Public Toilets run by the Cottingham Village Trust. To the left was the Surveyor’s (the administrator of the Council) home and his rent office with a special small, narrow window for people to pay their rent. Upstairs is the Council Chamber, with its curved decorated plaster ceiling. This was used as Cottingham’s public library from 1955 until 1998, when a new library was built by the East Riding Council behind this building.
High up on the side wall of the building is the fire and air raid siren.
