Former Dudley Museum and Art Gallery - Virtual Tour
The grade II listed red brick and terracotta building was constructed in 1883 by Bateman & Corser of Birmingham as the Dudley School of Art and Free Library and was officially opened on 29th July 1884. The building brought under one roof two much-needed institutions 'to form a great school for mental culture'. The Free Library went from strength to strength, until the Central Public Library was built opposite in 1909. The Art School also produced notable talent, including the local artist Percy Shakespeare, for whom a blue plaque has been installed on this building.
