Discover Bedford’s first municipal cemetery opened in 1855. Both the gatehouse and chapels were designed in the Gothic revival style. Every type of headstone design popular in the Victorian period can be found in the cemetery.

Foster Hill Road Cemetery is somewhere that people visit graves, soak in the atmosphere of a peaceful place to wander, look at the intricate headstone carvings and study the architecture of the buildings. They are largely Victorian, and are exactly what you expect buildings to look like in a cemetery. Typically Gothic in design, they evoke feelings of a different time, stark and slightly mysterious. Two architects in particular made their marks, and our website has full articles about them. If walls could talk, then the Gatehouse building in particular would have interesting tales to tell.
