During the Victorian period (1837-1901) the town of Sudbury saw many changes, from the coming of the railway, to mass building clearance in the 1840s as a result of the Town Improvement Act (1826). This tour explores how the built environment changed as a result of massive societal and political shift during this era.
The Victorians knew how to build, and all over Sudbury from imposing Civic Buildings, to exquisite Gothic Revival buildings, to Mills and Factories, an abiding architectural feature of Sudbury's townscape, the 'Ballingdon Red and White' bricks, which are particularly prevelant on Station Road as warehouses were thrown up around the railway sidings on Great Eastern Street. This tour also encourges you look up, where exquisite ironwork and arts and crafts style detail can be found all over town.
