Frogmore Paper Mill – the birthplace of paper’s industrial revolution
Frogmore Paper Mill, Fourdrinier Way, Apsley, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, HP3 9RY
Chosen as the site for Henry and Sealy Foundrinier's newly-patented paper machine, Frogmore Paper Mill is the oldest mechanised paper mill in the world. The first place to produce cheap, plentiful paper, the mill changed the course of history. Frogmore Mill was the birthplace of paper’s industrial revolution in 1803. It also represents the extraordinary paper history of both the Fourdrinier and John Dickinson Mills, John Dickinson being a remarkable inventor with 39 patented ideas to his name. This is Paper Valley.
Following a devastating fire, the site was closed to visitors in 2022. It is due to be opened again very soon, but this is likely to be a ‘hard hat tour’ due to the ongoing reconstruction and renovation.
