From humble beginnings to major landmark
St Thomas and St John Church, New Church Street, Radcliffe, Greater Manchester, M26 2UD
The parish of St Thomas was created from the ancient parish of Radcliffe. The first church of St Thomas was built in 1819 in the Grecian style. When it was judged too small to accommodate the growing population it was demolished and a new church was built on the site in 1864 with seating for 1200 people. It was built in the perpendicular style with money donated by Countess Grosvenor. The tower was added in 1871. Although it was built to accommodate a peel of 6 bells it only ever had one. The churchyard was closed by Order in Council in 1957, gravestones removed and the area laid to grass by the Parks Department. St Thomas became St Thomas and St John when the latter church had to close and was subsequently demolished. There will be opportunities to hear the organ being played during the weekend. Information about the history of the building will be on display and there will be fun activities for children and adults.

Ramp access into the building. However there are 2 steps into the chancel. Parking at church is limited but possible for disabled people. Cars can be left at the Metrolink station nearby and the medical centre car park can be used on Saturday and Sunday when the centre is closed. Be aware that the Dunelm car park is primarily for their customers and stay is limited. Please be sure to check restrictions. There is a small car park on Blackburn street opposite the church. There are no planned guided tours, but volunteers will be available to answer any questions you may have.
Information about the church life and events/services can be found on A Church Near You website. Anyone will be very welcome to attend the Sunday morning service of Holy Communion at 11.00am. The historic organ will be played at certain times on the Saturday by volunteer organists. The last day of the festival will conclude with a Songs of Praise celebration at 4.00pm. We are hoping to "raise the roof" with a rendition of favourite hymns. Everyone is welcome to attend our morning service and we are encouraging participation at the 4.00pm celebration.
