From Ruin to Revival: film screening plus a talk from Accredited Conservator-Restorer, John Wynn-Griffiths
The National Trust, Sizergh, Kendal, Cumbria, LA8 8AE
In 2023, an unforeseen water leak caused significant damage to a collection of historic paintings, frames and furniture at Sizergh. What followed was an extraordinary journey of conservation, craftsmanship and renewal, bringing together specialist conservators, National Trust staff, volunteers and supporters in a shared effort to safeguard some of Sizergh's most treasured items.
Join us for a screening of 'From Ruin to Revival', a short film that tells the story of the past two and a half years and the remarkable work undertaken to restore damaged objects to the collection. Following the film, furniture conservator John Wynn-Griffiths, who features in the documentary, will share the story behind the conservation of Sizergh's water-damaged Bureau Mazarin. Discover the methods, challenges and careful decision-making involved in preserving this important piece of furniture and returning it to display.
John will also discuss the conservation of one of the most significant pieces of furniture in the collection and a masterpiece of design by Richard Gillow of Lancaster. Made in 1779, the satinwood office cabinet remains remarkably well-documented, with Gillow's original design instructions surviving to tell the story of its creation.
This event offers a rare opportunity to explore the stories of two extraordinary objects and hear first-hand about the skill, expertise and dedication required to care for nationally significant historic collections.
