Discover The Old Town Hall’s extraordinary 19th‑century past through its original theatrical posters. Explore magic, music, impersonation, and Victorian spectacle in a self‑guided trail revealing the performers who once wowed Hemel Hempstead.

Step back into the vibrant world of Victorian entertainment with this self‑guided tour of The Old Town Hall’s original 19th‑century theatrical posters. As you move through the building, you’ll uncover the remarkable stories behind the performers who once took to our stage — from magicians who astonished audiences with illusions like The Sphinx and the Great Indian Basket Trick, to comic conjurors, ventriloquists, and quick‑change artists who toured the world before appearing right here in Hemel Hempstead.
Meet Alfred Stodare, whose magical feats were once performed for Queen Victoria; Professor Oliver, the Merry Magician known for his comic sleight‑of‑hand; Basil Rivers, a celebrated female impersonator and ventriloquist; and Emma Stanley, whose acclaimed show The Seven Ages of Woman brought dozens of characters to life in a single evening. You’ll also encounter the musical Greenhead Family and learn how community concerts and festive celebrations shaped the cultural life of the town.
Each poster offers a window into the creativity, humour, and daring spirit of Victorian showmanship. This trail invites you to explore at your own pace, discovering how The Old Town Hall has been a home for extraordinary performances for more than 155 years — and continues to be today.
