Gateacre Chapel

Gateacre Chapel was built for a community of non-conformists established in 1690. Their eighteenth-century building survives, including the original pulpit, from which the celebrated William Shepherd, friend of William Roscoe and opponent of the slave trade preached. His memorial is on the chapel wall. The chapel was substantially reordered in the nineteenth century and the pews and communion table date from this period. There is a beautiful stained glass window donated by Henry Tate (founder of the Tate Gallery).

Accessibility details

There are steps up to the churchyard. We have a wheelchair and pram ramp which can be put in place as required (we need to be alerted to this need, so a companion who is able to alert us and assist is necessary). There is an additional single step into the chapel with no ramp. Volunteers will be on hand to help. There are no accessible toilet facilities.
