Visit Liverpool's Toxteth Library during the Heritage Open Days festival 2026 to view a special exhibition about the life of George Garrett presented by Writing on the Wall.

As part of Liverpool City Council's Heritage Open Days programme, Writing on the Wall presents a special exhibition celebrating the life and legacy of Liverpool writer, seafarer and social historian George Garrett (1895-1966), whose work gave voice to the everyday lives of working people.
The exhibition explores Garrett's writing, his experiences at sea and on Liverpool's docks, and his commitment to recording the stories of ordinary people. Visitors can view original artefacts, photographs, manuscripts, publications, film and archive material, while members of the George Garrett Archive Project will be available throughout the day to share insights into his life and work. The exhibition also explores Garrett's friendship with George Orwell, who spent time with him in Liverpool while researching The Road to Wigan Pier.

This year's exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Sean Garrett, George Garrett's grandson, who sadly passed away on 2 August 2026. Sean was instrumental in the success of the George Garrett Archive Project, generously sharing his family's history and helping preserve his grandfather's remarkable legacy for future generations.
Everyone is welcome to come along, explore the exhibition and discover the story of one of Liverpool's most significant, yet often overlooked, literary voices.

Please see dates and times below for exhibition open hours.
