Graves Park: 1926-2026 Centenary Walk

Starting at the main entrance to Graves Park at the top of Derbyshire Lane/Cobnar Road, join us for a guided walk through Graves Park, following the original paths laid out by the Corporation in 1926. Celebrate with us the magnificent gift from J G Graves, including parts of the Old London Road, the ancient woodland and the 18th century park landscape, identifying features of ecological, historic and archaeological interest. As you walk, find out about landscapes, ancient woodlands and ancient settlements. Topics included will cover archaeology, history and ecology. There will also be a focus on the importance of the gifts of J G Graves and the impact he made to the creation of the Green Belt. References will also be made to his work with Ethel Haythornthwaite (Gallimore) and their joint enterprise in buying and preserving land for the ordinary people. The walk will finish at the Rose Garden Café.

Directions:

The walk starts at the Derbyshire Lane entrance to Graves Park at the top of Derbyshire Lane, at the junction with Cobnar Road and Hemsworth Road. Local bus stops nearby are for the 18 and 18a, the 20 bus stops at the top of Warminster Road nearby. Various buses run along Chesterfield Road and Meadowhead; it's a steep climb up Cobnar Road to the start of the walk, however. Car parking is available at the sports pavilion car park at the top of Cobnar Road (only accessible from Derbyshire Lane/Hemsworth Road route). The main car park to Graves Park is accessed at the bottom of Bunting Nook/top of Warminster Road and is pay and display. There is also car parking at the Charles Ashmore entrance to the park.

It's a big park - facilities are widespread! Toilets are situated at the café. The walks are at a leisurely pace. The walk will utilise well established footpaths.The route is gently undulating with occasional slopes; some areas might be uneven or muddy, depending on the weather at that time of year. Please wear sturdy shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. A drink may be necessary.
