The church was built in 1870. This building is a typical example of Byzantine architecture, having four domes. The famous builder Henry Sumner was commissioned to build the church. The church was dedicated to St. Nicholas, the Patron Saint of all seamen, as the money for the building was raised by the Greek ship owners who were based in Liverpool.
