Guided History Tour of St. Denys Church Chilworth
St. Denys Church, Chilworth Old Village, Off A27, Southampton, Hampshire, SO16 7NN
St. Denys Church is of Saxon origin and is mentioned in the Domesday Book. It came under the control of the Priory of Saint Denys in Southampton about the year 1224 and bears the name of that saint. After the year 1700 the church fell into disrepair and became a ruin with no ceiling. In 1812 Peter Searle, the Lord of the Manor, rebuilt the church at his own expense. Now St. Denys has an impressive ceiling and the oldest bells in Hampshire dating back to the 12th century. The tour will take you around the church pointing out the interesting bits of history which have shaped this church over the centuries and the people who lived in the village including the famous Victorian sculptor and artist Richard Cockle Lucas. It will also include information on those who have over the centuries kept it a place of worship and a haven of peace for the community of Chilworth and beyond.
