A guided tour of this dramatic Victorian church with its Gothic interior and vivid stained glass windows by a volunteer Art Historian.

Half a mile from the motorway and within walking distance of its bustling Leigh Delamere Service Station, still within earshot of the roaring traffic, is the quite extraordinary church of St Margaret of Antioch.

Listed Grade II*, it was built in 1846–48 to replace a mediaeval one, parts of which dated from the 13th century. Although neither ancient nor immediately imposing, the present church is remarkable for the circumstances of, and the philosophy behind, its construction, as well as for its many unusual features.

The Gothic gloom of the chancel, with its extravagant reredos, carved and decorated in many colours, contrasts with the tremendous colours of the great west window by Wilmshurst.

The original church's splendid bell-cote can now be seen at Sevington School one mile to the west.

There will be a half hour tour for those wishing to know more about the history of the church on Saturday 12th September. The church will be open throughout the festival, with trails available for families to complete.
