Guided tour of the heritage on display at Handforth Station
Station Road, Handforth, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 3AD
The Friends of Handforth Station group, formed in 1996, was the first of what are now over 1,000 such groups throughout the UK. As well as representing the views of the users of the station, they aim to make Handforth Station an attractive and welcoming place.
The FoHS have mounted heritage signs which have been designated as "nationally important" by the Science Museum Group, in addition to a large number of “Handforth“ totems (platform signs), each in the livery of a different national or international railway operating company. The FoHS have received and display numerous awards, especially for their “Platform for Art” which includes sculptures, artistic stainless steel screens and welcoming arches over the steps to the platforms. The majority of these have been designed by professional artists working with the local community and schools.
Especially for Railway 200, poems are displayed in the community information boards, and there is an ever-changing exhibition in their “Art in a Box” gallery (created from two disused bicycle lockers !).
Each tour will be led by a member of FoHS, ready to give an entertaining talk about the station and happy to discuss Handforth, its station and railways in general with everyone.

There are 36 steps between the ticket office at road level and each platform.
After 20 years of campaigning for lifts to be installed, to provide Access for All to the platforms, drawings have now been published and work is programmed to start in 2026. FoHS have ambitious aspirations to enhance the basic infrastructure, engaging artists and designers to work with the local community using a number of grant awards, sponsorship and business partnerships. The FoHS tour guide can discuss all this as well.
