Guided walking tour of the grounds of Hunstanton Hall

The Hall is the ancestral home of the Le Strange family who came to England just after the Norman Conquest. Construction of the original Hall was started in 1309. The gatehouse was built in 1487 by Sir Roger Le Strange who was an important man in the household of King Henry VII. .
Sir Hamon Le Strange, Lord of the Manor between 1604 and 1654 built the main Hall. During the Civil War, Roger Le Strange supported Charles 1.
When Henry L'Estrange Styleman inherited the estate in 1819, the Hall had not been lived in for years but his mother went to great efforts to restore the status of Lord of the Manor for her son. In the 1840's Henry worked closely with architect William Butterfield to design the new town of Hunstanton as a 'sea bathing resort'. The first building now known as the Golden Lion Hotel was opened in 1846 and the railway came in 1862.
The Jacobean wings and porch of the Hall burnt down in 1853. Victorian blocks date from 1835 and 1876.
