Beneath the weather-saving covering lies the best surviving charcoal blast furnace in the UK. Built by Sir John Wintour in 1625 to smelt iron for the Civil War. Join our hard-hat tour to see the latest phase in this ongoing repair project.

A rare opportunity for visitors to view the on-going repairs at this significant Grade 2* Listed Building which is probably the most complete early charcoal fired blast furnace in Western Europe. Funding has recently been received that makes further restoration work possible. This year the Forest of Dean Buildings Preservation Trust have completed major timber repairs to the roof of the charging house enabling removal of some of the internal scaffolding revealing part of the interior.
The event is not suitable for children under twelve.
