Halesworth Transport History Guided Walk
Saxon's Way Middle Car Park, Halesworth, Suffolk, IP19 8BF
As part of Halesworth’s Heritage Open Days, volunteers from the Halesworth to Southwold Narrow Gauge Railway Charitywill lead a guided walk at 10.00 from the Middle Car Park, between Saxons Way and Thoroughfare, through the Town Park into Halesworth Millennium Green. The walk will take approximately one and a half hours, and will end at the award-winning Halesworth Museum, where you can see a film about the railway, and also the station’s unique platforms, which used to open!
The walk will feature the substantial remnants of the 18th century Blyth Navigation, and the trackbed of the 1879 to 1929 Southwold Railway, where volunteers have re-instated part of the main line and the 1914 locomotive shed site.
Led by long-term railway volunteers Paul and Shirley Taylor this walk will show you how Halesworth used the navigation and the narrow-gauge railway in the early days to become a leading brewing and market town, and how goods and passengers were brought to the town from Southwold. Most of the walk is on the country’s largest Millennium Green, which is also run by a Charity, and is a very important asset to the town.
