Heritage Guild Clubs Open Day: The Gardeners’ Guild

Discover Heritage Guild Clubs at the Engine Room: a new approach to heritage education bringing children, families and local knowledge together through making, practical skills and shared responsibility.
At the heart of our Heritage Open Day will be a free, hands-on Gardeners’ Guild taster, created with Emma from Emma’s Wild Garden and Jane from SWAN Women’s Centre. Children and families will work with seasonal cut flowers and greenery to make decorations for the Engine Room’s tables.
Rather than simply making something to take home, participants will help care for and beautify a shared place. This introduces a central idea of Heritage Guild Clubs: children encounter heritage by participating in it.
The Gardeners are one of a family of Guilds through which children can explore growing and ecology, cooking and hospitality, making and repair, history and heraldry, textiles, performance, trade and the practical organisation of events and places.
Two short talks during the day will introduce the wider Heritage Guild Clubs idea, including how children and families can participate and how the Guilds could develop at the Engine Room.
Activities are free, informal and family-friendly. No previous experience is needed, and adults are encouraged to make alongside children.

- 1100–1600, drop-in family activities throughout. Heritage Guild Clubs talks at 1200 and 1430.

- The event takes place at the Engine Room in Wayfarers Arcade. Enter the arcade from Lord Street and follow signs for the Engine Room. Heritage Guild Club activities will take place in the Engine Room space including the upstairs studio.

Accessibility details
The upstairs studio is not accessible except via stairs. The downstairs cafe can be accessed via mezzanine with lift access in the Wayfarers Arcade.
Additional information
This is an intergenerational activity and adults are warmly encouraged to make alongside children rather than simply accompany them. All materials for the Gardeners’ Guild activity are provided free of charge. Visitors are welcome to participate for a short time or remain for the talks and wider open day. The activity uses real flowers, foliage and simple floristry materials. Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult.
