Hertford Castle Heritage Day
Hertford Castle, Hertford, Hertfordshire, SG14 1HR
Step back in time and explore the Castle lawn, transformed into a lively medieval settlement with interactive encampments. The Castle itself will be open to explore, and the performance arena will host storytelling, archery demonstrations, and thrilling Viking battle re-enactments. You’ll also find a great selection of food and drink, craft and charity stalls, making it a fun-filled day for all the family.
Hertford Castle is a magnificent Grade I listed building, which dates from the mid-15th century. It is situated in beautiful grounds, nestled at the heart of Hertford, and was a Royal Palace for over 300 years where Queen Elizabeth I spent much of her childhood. The Hertford Castle Gatehouse is all that remains of Hertford Castle, but this impressive building can be explored as part of the event including the Mayor’s Parlour, Robing Room and themed basement.

The castle grounds are largely step-free, although some areas have uneven paving. Please note that the main event takes place outdoors on grass. The ground floor of the Castle is accessible, but the Robing Toom and themed basement does not have wheelchair access due to a spiral staircase. First aid will be provided by St John's Ambulance. The nearest Changing Places toilet is located in the foyer area of BEAM, The Wash.
The event is FREE of charge to attend, you are however welcome to donate to the Mayor of Hertford’s Charity Appeal Fund. The Castle grounds can be accessed at any of the following pedestrian gates: Castle Street, St Andrew Street Car Park, Main Castle Gate off The Wash or through the Moat Garden on Castle Street. Unfortunately, there is no public parking at Hertford Castle (including disabled) but there are a number of car parks close to the Castle.
