Experience Hearth and Holme: A walking tour of Hinchcliffe Mill

From the first settlement in the Middle Ages through to the woollen mills of the nineteenth century, Hinchliffe Mill has an interesting story. As well as examining the current buildings for clues about their history, we will use old maps and photographs at various stopping points on our tour. The majority of the route will be along tarmac roads and a few uneven paths. An optional steeper climb to reach one of the oldest houses in the Holme Valley will be the final call.

We will visit the site of devastation in the Holmfirth Flood of 1852 and the rebuilding of the houses. We will look at all three mills in the village, the site of the original medieval mill and the later two woollen mils, including Yew Tree Mill, still producing cloth today. We will also consider the development of housing in the village as well as the chapel and school.
