Library, Moss's Arcade, Ripon, North Yorkshire, HG4 1AG
Ripon's long history dates from the 7th Century, join us at Ripon Library to uncover the history on your doorstep. Pop along to our local history fair and meet representatives from Ripon Civic Society, Ripon Together, Ripon History & Archaeology Tribe (RHATs), Ripon Military Heritage Trust, and Ripon Museums. As well as taking a look at hidden gems from the library's local history collection you can discover more at our talks. At 10.30am a panel of local historians will cover Secret Ripon, the creation of the Ripon Historical Map and Atlas, as well as Ripon's military history. At 1.30pm you can discover .'The Truth about St Wilfrid; the real Reason he claimed Ripon and Hexham as his own'. In this illustrated talk Andy Bates will use place name evidence, literary sources, history, archaeology and Anglo Saxon artefacts to demonstrate why it really was that Wilfrid built his churches at Ripon and at Hexham, and the reason is probably not what you think.
Please contact the library to book a place for the talks - seats are limited.
