History of Minsmere Guided Walk

Minsmere Nature Reserve, Westleton, Saxmundham, Suffolk, IP17 3BY

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking not required

A guided walk around RSPB Minsmere detailing its history and foundation as a Nature Reserve from the end of the second world war onwards.

During the Second World War, the sluice gates on the Minsmere River were opened to create natural defenses against potential invasion. What began as a wartime strategy unexpectedly paved the way for the return of the avocet to the UK - and laid the foundations for the RSPB's flagship nature reserve.

Join us for a guided walk to explore the fascinating history behind the creation of Minsmere. See the remains of old wartime sea defences, the scrap and the avocet whose return to the UK made Minsmere an important site for conservation.
