History of Walcot and Parks
Buckhurst Park Community Centre, Burghley Close, Swindon, Wiltshire, SN3 3BS
Walcot and the Parks area of east Swindon has a history stretching back to the Domesday Book, when Walcot was recorded as a small rural settlement. For centuries the area was mainly farmland, including Upper and Lower Walcot Farms and Park Farm.
The area changed dramatically during the 1950s when Swindon was designated as a London overspill town. Large areas of farmland were purchased for housing, and new estates were built to accommodate families moving from London and other parts of the country. Walcot East became one of Swindon's major post-war housing developments.
Many early residents arrived while construction was still underway, with roads, shops and community facilities being developed alongside the new homes. The estates helped meet the growing demand for housing and supported Swindon's expanding industries.
Today, Walcot and the Parks are diverse and vibrant communities with strong local identities. The area includes neighbourhood centres, green spaces, schools, community organisations and a rich heritage linked to Swindon's post-war growth and development.
We will showcase real lived experience from our residents and also showcase the changes in the area using pieces from the Swindon Archives.
The exhibition will take place at Buckhurst Community Centre from 10:30am until 3pm.
