History Tour of Newent including St. Mary's Church

Market House, Newent, Gloucestershire, GL18 1PS

  • Multiple dates available
  • In person
  • Pre-booking preferred

Learn about the history of Newent and St Mary's Church from a guided walk led by Dood Pearce – Chair of Newent Local History Society and Rev Canon Simon Mason – Rector of Newent. The walk will start at 2 at the Market Hall and finish at the church.

The walk will start from the seventeenth century black and white Market House and end inside St Mary's church. Many historic listed buildings are to be found in the main streets from half timbered Tudor dwellings to grand Georgian and Victorian houses as well as the quaint shambles. Newent also boasts a plaque marking the Newent-born Joe Meek (of ‘Telstar’ fame) as well as the more recently decorated gold post box, celebrating the Olympic achievements of local equestrienne Charlotte Dujardin and, until July 2017, the longest cul-de-sac in Europe (Foley Road). There has been a church on the site of St Mary's since Saxon times. Tea, coffee and cake will be served at the conclusion of the tour.
