Hobbacott Canal Incline
Hobbacott Down, Stratton, Bude, Cornwall, EX23 9NR
The Bude Canal was fully opened 200 years ago this year, mainly to carry sea sand to spread on the inland clay soils, and comprised some 36 miles of canal in 3 branches. The Canal was primarily a tub boat canal in which trains of tub boats were hauled by horses. Rather than locks, the canal achieved changes of level in very hilly countryside, by means of inclined planes. The tub boats had wheels and were pulled up the railed inclines by water power. Five of the inclines were powered by waterwheels, the sixth at Hobbacott was the longest and highest at 935 feet long and a rise of 225 feet and was worked by a bucket in a well arrangement.
