Hobbacott Canal Incline

The Hobbacott Canal Incline was one of six on the Bude Canal but was longer and higher than the others, and was the longest canal incline in the country. It was 935 feet long and its height was 225 feet. The main motive power was provided by buckets in wells which were filled with water to pull the boats up the incline. There was also an auxiliary steam engine in case of breakdowns of the primary mechanism. The Canal was built primarily to carry sea sand to improve the heavy clay soils. The Canal was opened in 1823 and this part closed in 1891. The incline slope, the outline of the basin at the top, the sites of the wells, and a warehouse are all visible.
