Church open Mon-Fri: 10h-12h, 13h-16h; Sat 12, 19 Sep: 13h-17h; Sun 13, 20 Sep: 12h30-17h. Tours (10h, 14h, 16h (Sat 12 & 19 Sep: 13h with BSL)), telling the history, art and prayer life of this community since 1871.

This Catholic Church of the Holy Name of Jesus, built and opened by the Jesuits in 1871, served as a parish Church for a densely populated area till late into the 20th c as the land around it was rebuilt for the University. It now serves as the Catholic Chaplaincy Church for the Universities in Manchester. Using 19th c. technology it presented 12th c. Northern French Gothic to the people of Manchester. It remains a much loved and Church in Manchester with an active worshipping community, also hosting many concerts throughout the year.
The Tower, designed by Giles and Adrian Gilbert Scott, was added five decades after the Church opened, and has undergone much needed restoration work. in the the last years. .
Guided visits on Saturday at 10h, 14h, 16h & Sunday at 14h, 16h and on request, when available Mon-Fri.
Masses Sun 11h (sung), 19h (sung), Mon -Sat 12h30.

The Holy Name is on a busy bus route; Oxford Road is closed to cars; parking is very difficult, with the nearest public parking in the Hospital Car Park on Grafton Street M13.

Accessibility details

Part of the visit is not accessible to wheelchairs because it involve stairs into the organ loft and into the Sanctuary of the Church (though wheelchair users can hear the guide and see into the Sanctuary from the main level of the Church. There will be one BSL tour on Sat 12th Sep 2026 as advertised.
