Holy Trinity Church - Open To All

Visitors to this church, dating 1696, will find two marvellous surprises!

ONE - some interesting pillars! Peter Mews, the Bishop of Winchester, had donated the land for Holy Trinity, as Gosport's population was rapidly expanding and St Mary’s, Alverstoke was becoming too busy. He then sent 14 oak trees from his estate at Farnham Castle to use as pillars inside the new church - these can still be seen, hidden beneath the plaster-covering if you know where to look...

TWO: an object that would forever be associated with it: the Handel Organ. The classical composer, Handel, was involved with the creation of the organ for the Duke of Chandos, and the church bought the organ from his estate. Although it has undergone extensive restoration, four of the stops on the great organ and five on the choir organ are original Jordan work.

In addition, the church has a wonderful barrel vault ceiling, a mixture of architectural styles, and a lot of history!

There is a printed booklet to guide you around the Church, and concregation members will be on hand to answer questions.

Accessibility details

There is full wheelchair and pushchair access to the church (except a couple of steps up to the altar). On-road parking or nearby carparks, and Blue Badge holders can be dropped off and picked up by the door. Please wear soft shoes (not stiletto heels, which might damage the floor). Changing Places (facilities for youth and adults with high needs are available (10 minute walk up High Street) at Gosport Discovery Centre, except for Sundays.

Please note that during the festival there will also be different events being held at Holy Trinity Church such as: Stories behind our favourite hymns with Pam Rhodes; Clearance Diving - the ups and downs of training; the Art of Local History (an insight in to the career of a local artist, Neil Marshall); and Gosport Wildlife Photography (an illustrated talk by local photographer, Jon Mitchell).
