Hope and Heritage

Great St Mary’s have been thinking about issues facing the environment and considering how we stay hopeful in the face of climate change and biodiversity loss. Come along to hear about their project and how they have engaged schools, scientists, theologians, and visitors to the city in asking important questions and thinking about how they can act to make a positive impact on the world.
Great St Mary's ran a poetry competition to encourage young people to engage with these questions, and received some wonderful entries. At this event you will have the opportunity to view the winning poems and also take a look at the kind of questions being raised by their congregation and visitors to Cambridge in relation to the environment. You can add questions of your own, to help shape the discussions moving forward, or if you work in environmental science maybe you will have some answers!

There will also be a guided tour of the church and you will be able to hear about the fascinating history, spanning 8 centuries, being shaped by (and shaping) British and European history including the Reformation. Find out which monarch inadvertently donated trees that did not belong to him to build their roof, and hear about Queen Elizabeth I’s two visits to the church.
