How Railways killed a Canal

Between 1816 & 1872 the Wey & Arun Junction Canal formed the final link in a chain of inland waterways connecting London to the English Channel. This walk introduces walkers to a section of the former canal and the railways which caused its closure.

Meet at 14:15 on Sunday 21 September at the Canal Trust's Information Point close to the northernmost section of the former canal, east side of A281 Horsham Road, Shalford, GU4 8EQ; OS grid reference TQ 000462. Free parking in large lay-by alongside junction of A281 and Trunley Heath Road. Cross A281 on foot using central refuge, Information Point is on right of Wey-South Path via ramped boardwalk. Bus service 53 Guildford-Ewhurst along A281 is approximately hourly on Sundays. Shalford rail station is 1km north along A281. A circular walk of 4km largely on footpaths, towpath and cycleway which can be muddy in wet weather, hence walking boots or stout shoes are essential. Route includes a a handful of short ascents and descents including a descent of approx. 30 earthen steps and an ascent of 14 steps. Well-behaved dogs on leads welcome.
