These remarkable floor tiles have survived many centuries of hard wear and trampling. Discover the skills and techniques that went into the craft of tile making in this talk and demonstration.

The inlaid floor tiles at Winchester Cathedral are one of the biggest and best tile pavements that we have in Europe. However all records and knowledge as to how they were made was lost in 1500's so no-one knows how they were made. I have been striving to relearn and recreate the craft of tile making. The talk will look at the types of tiles that were made in medieval times and how I have developed skills and techniques to replicate the original work. The talk will include a demonstration that show cases the ways I have found to recreate the tiles.

NB sign up (through the Heritage Open Day website) forHyde900’s Medieval Tile Making and have a go at making a tile yourself.
