Unbelievers in a city of churches: a humanist heritage walk

St. Andrews Plain, St. Andrews Street, Norwich, Norfolk, NR3 1AU

  • 20 Sep 2025
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

A circular walk exploring the rich and radical history of freethinkers, secularists, and humanists in Norwich — from a shoemaker astronomer to the first atheist MP.

Norwich is well known for its many places of worship, and for a remarkable history of religious dissent and nonconformity. But what about those who questioned the faiths in which they'd been raised, rejected religion entirely, or simply advocated for good works on a 'purely human' basis?

Join Norwich native and Heritage Manager for Humanists UK, Madeleine Goodall, for a short, circular walk in the footsteps of some of those who questioned, campaigned, and created communities along humanist lines, rooted in reason and compassion. From the freethinking Harriet Martineau, to the atheist MP Charles Bradlaugh, discover the lesser-known lives and little-noted stories to be found along familiar streets.
