In every piece of land, the soil has a memory

Library, 69 Rock Road, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, CB1 7UG

  • 20 Sep 2025
  • In person
  • Pre-booking required

Come along for an experimental drawing walk exploring the front gardens and streets of Cherry Hinton, where we will discover the area’s ecology and natural history.

Led by artists Eleanor Goulding (of Denman+Gould) and Abi Wheeler, this relaxed session invites you to see and map the landscape in new and creative ways. The drawings made on the walk will contribute to a record of local observation and research about the land before and after the development of area, and will help inform the public artworks planned for the new homes being built on Fanshawe Road.

Together, we will explore
• Alternative ways of mapping
• Observational drawing
• The variety of shapes and patterns found in local flora and fauna
• The natural world of Cherry Hinton
• How art can help us connect with place and memory

Starting outside Rock Road Library, this is an easy, circular walk of approximately 2km with a number of stopping points along the route. Due to the nature of the walk being on public footpaths and pavements, there may be some curbs and uneven surfaces.

Denman+Gould specialise in public and community-based art and design projects that explore our connection to place and the natural world. As artists, makers, and researchers, they work across disciplines, from large-scale public art to film and sculpture. Driven by a passion for making, accessibility, the outdoors, and sustainability, they create work that invites people to reflect on their place within the world around them.

Abi Wheeler is a freelance producer and creative engagement practitioner with a placemaking and community specialism.
