Indian History Stories
Handsworth Library, Soho Road, Birmingham, West Midlands, B21 9DP
Indian History Stories will explore some interesting stories that are not taught in history books. This free family day will be full of stories of how Indian women in saris were able to help with the Second World War. Many do not know that during the world wars Indian Princesses were using their platforms to help women and families who were in danger. The Heritage Open Day event will allow communities to have access to archives, photographs and resources to enrich our learning and how everyone can connect to heritage events and projects.
The event is held at Handsworth Library, Soho Road, B21 9DP and will have activities for all the family. Enjoy the free talks, our Indian Women and War pop up exhibition and refreshments to help share these South Asian stories. There will be arts and craft activities for everyone to have fun and learn new stories. During the Second World War, Indian women were able to enlist in the Army and Royal Navy. This was the first time in history that this was allowed and many women joined so that they could earn their own money. The stories will also include how sisters Princess Catherine Duleep Singh and Princess Sophia Duleep Singh were also coming to rescue women and families. There will be a range of stories that also include Indian soldiers being awarded the Victoria Cross (the highest military award) and what happened after the war. The event is to raise awareness of the range of histories not taught in schools.
