John Constable's Colchester
Mercury Theatre, Balkerne Gate, Colchester, Essex, CO1 1PT
John Constable, who was born 250 years ago this year, was brought up in East Bergholt in Suffolk and spent much of his adult life living in Hampstead, north London. He had relatives living in Colchester, the Mason family who lived at St Mary's House in the town centre, and quite often Constable would stay with them when travelling between home and family. Whilst in Colchester he went out with his sketch book and recorded the buildings and landscape, mainly around the town centre, and in doing so provided an historical record of the area as it then was.
This walk, starting at the Mercury Theatre and lasting about two hours, will visit sites where Constable sketched, comparing what he saw then with the situation now. The walk ends in Head Street having circumnavigated the city centre.
The tour will be led by local guide Bob Finch.
