Real Crafty, 9 Upper Dicconson Street, Wigan, Greater Manchester, WN1 2AD
Discover 200 years of Wigan’s King Street through an exhibition of vibrant new paintings by David Barrow, & original poems by Ken Scally, and a presentation by Wigan Local History & Heritage Society.
King Street boasts more than a dozen listed buildings and over two centuries of architectural innovation, from grand theatres and elegant Georgian houses to one of the country’s earliest glass arcades.
This illustrated talk and celebration uses art to tell the story of the street. The Wigan Local History and Heritage Society will weave together four years of meticulous research with David Barrow’s vibrant new paintings and specially commissioned poems by Ken Scally. Through these works and the history behind them, you’ll meet the builders, architects, craftsmen, civic leaders and the extraordinary people who shaped King Street, discover the original purposes of its landmarks, and see how they have been transformed over time.
A short virtual guided walk will visit key buildings, exploring their architectural details, historic functions, and place in Wigan’s story. The evening also marks the launch of a new book, King Street: Wigan’s King of Streets, along with a new website opening up access to the full research archive.
