Kingsfield Orchard

The site was part of ‘Kings Fields’ so called it is said because it was here where King Richard II set up his camp prior to the battle of Gosford Green.
It appears on maps dated around 1860 when the City Fathers established Kings Fields Gardens, these were allotments which were for the use of Freemen of the City. The site was neglected for many years, having been isolated when the A444 North-South road was built over part of it, but some of the structure remains, as do many of the old trees, which, stripped of their cloak of ivy, are beginning to bear fruit again. The site has been colonised by lots of different flora and fauna, much of which we are trying to preserve, as well as planting a range of new trees, including fruit trees, to replace those which have died off. We have installed a pond and also cleared an area for use as an open-air classroom, which has been used regularly over the last year by pupils from Stoke Primary School. Our objective was to make the site an asset for the local community and to be a green oasis in the midst of a dense urban area and being relatively undisturbed be a haven for local wildlife.
