The Kingsway: Cleethorpes' Fight with the Sea
Knoll Street, Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, DN35 8LN
There was a building boom inland from the Kingsway area of Cleethorpes at the beginning of the 20th century. The exhibition will look at those who contributed to the creation of this area and the various industries and workers involved. There will also be a focus on the following well known local buildings: The Kingsway Hotel will celebrate its 100 years anniversary; The former unique Cafe Dansant, which was one of the town's top dance halls, will be on show in all its glory; See how the former Winter Gardens came about to become one of the leading venues in the resort and where many famous acts took place, including a famous race-horse which was invited into the building. The Empire Theatre will also feature as it celebrates its 130 years anniversary this year. A 10-minute documentary by Stuart Wood, of the Promenados, showcasing the theatre will be available for viewing on the Saturday.
Cleethorpes is twinned with Konigswinter in Germany. View the Konigswinter Room containing portraits and gifts received from visiting Burgermeisters and other German dignitaries. Also view the Council Chamber with its many paintings and where many weddings are held each year. Take a look at the Mayor's Parlour containing numerous portraits of the Royal family and plaques presented by visiting ships. A number of artifacts and Civic regalia will be on show to the public. Mayors of Cleethorpes from 1936 to 1996 are honoured on both sides of the staircase.
