The Universal Archive is a unique platform created to collate, digitise, preserve and disseminate stories of our past.

The Kirkburton Village Archive has been created to store and share the heritage of the villages of Kirkburton and Highburton. In 2022 a large private archive belonging to Robert Carter a local historian, journalist and photographer was acquired to save and preserve it for the future. The archive was extensive containing documents, books, letters, maps, unpublished manuscripts and over 70,000 photographs. The archive continues to grow as new material is donated/incorporated. In the intervening years a dedicated group of volunteers have worked hard to collate the material and working with Microform Digital the Kirkburton Village Archive is being launched in Heritage Week as the flagship for the Universal Archive which will be a platform whereby collections in private hands can be digitised and their content shared to create an ever growing platform of heritage related material.

A representative of Microform Digital will be on site to advise individuals, groups and organisation on how their collections can be digitised and preserved. For the first time the newly created Kirkburton Village Archive will be accessible but the public and the story of its creation and development will be told in short presentations. The scale of the work still to be done is daunting but everything has to start somewhere and our volunteers will be there to talk about our journey and encourage you to embark on your own.
